What is Open Studio | NY?

Simply a YouTube video channel were we will discuss content creation, and the ever widening tools we use for it, in ways that you may not see elsewhere. I expect to add a perspective that others don’t have.

Why Is That?

Simply because I have been doing content creation for over 40 years. Yes, since analog days. And back then I was creating client work for major brands, using old school cameras and drafting tables with T-squares and triangles.

A Digital Pioneer

Back in the 80s folks were calling me a “digital pioneer”. I was an early adopter of digital platforms. Some that pre-dated the Mac, or any Adobe products. But when those came around, I was invited to be a part of the original Photoshop dev/beta team. I got to work with the great John Knoll, creator of Photoshop with his brother Thomas, which they sold to Adobe. (John would later become the Executive Creative Director at Industrial Light & magic. Of lesser importance, he would also write the forward to my first book.)

Around that time I also began writing for the magazines. Many are long gone, but some like 3D World Magazine, I had the pleasure to be a contributor to across its entire 25 year lifespan. From 2000 when I saw my first articles appear, until just last year, when I saw my “3D World Year in Review” and other articles appear, just months before it folded.

And in 2012, when CreativeBloq.com was launched, I was asked to join the team. This is another publication that I continue to write many articles for even today. With its 5-6 million readers each month, I have covered everything from hardware and software reviews, opinion pieces, and critical looks at our varied communications industries: Advertising, Entertainment and other media.

My work has been seen in The New York Times, Art in America, Art Business News, Art Speak Magazine, MaxximumPC, Ad Age and more. And I have been an occasional talking head on NBC, CBS, and most recently Fox News.

Be the Outlet

So rather than continuing to chase the media outlets, today we can simply BE the outlet. And Open Studio | NY will become my main outlet for reviews, and thoughts. A place to discuss new directions. And simply a place to discuss what tools are the best bet for whatever crazy things we creatives get involved with.

On the Down-low

Unlike other projects, this is going to be casual, just between you and me. So nothing fancy. Instead I want this to be about the discussion. The discussion between you and me. And with any guests we we find along the way.

And about the great tools we will be discussing. Tools from some of the best developers on the planet. Many are great companies. But many more are independents who are bringing us some of the most amazing tools. This includes the ever-growing Open Source communities who are increasingly the most important sector of our industry. It’s a category that increasingly includes some of my favorite tool-sets.
